I stepped into the local 'Mise' tonight cause everything in Kasukabe was pretty much a failure. I got a little bit of praise for being by myself, but nothing to be proud of. The local 'Mise' was alright, full of locals, well above my age, with middle aged women serving. My plan of drinking one beer, talking to some locals for 15 minutes was a great approach, but cost around $18. Did numbers for my social status in the neighborhood as well as my wallet. I'd prefer the smaller atmosphere of 'ol mama sans. But regardless, a necessary experience. I liked that the first question asked when I entered was 'can you speak japanese?', meaning if I said "a little", I'd be asked to leave. The place is full of local citizens and really, the deepest culture experience, but, once is really enough. Had there been younger servers, I'd consider going back, but fuck that shit, 7% chuhais down the street for 86 cents.

These are the places we could call "guilds" for accepting apprenticeships of odd jobs and crazy adventures. The extent of what the local folk'll do to you is TBD and the ball is in your court. Game.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't the "box" feel of mama sans. It was the more expensive, customers on one side, women servers on the other, in rotation. At one point a server got close to the dude next to me to ask about my existence one way or another, he denied anything she said and was totally happy that I was there. A certain Ba-san gave me an angry eye the entire time. It was too big to be a hole in the wall, and with the price tag, theres no way it was worth it. It's like I paid for them to open the door for me when I left. I think there are some smaller places near the center of town that I might try out. There's also a clearly defined block of host bars that I really don't care to enter, and some Ho's asked if I needed a message. I think next time I'm gonna keep a conversation on the street as long as I can for shits.
